Rapirea din Serai
Tomeci ︎ 2021
Many romanians will remember the epic depiction of Rapirea din Serai, a turkish tapestry that made its way into our parents’ and grandparents’ homes during the communist regime.
This particular tapestry has become an almost unironic symbol of nostalgia - seeing it often comes with a feeling of comfort for ages that are no more.
The original turkish tapestry was inspired from an opera authored by Mozart, “Die Entführung aus dem Serail”.
The story follows two women who are trapped in an ottoman palace, but manage to escape, at the Pasha’s mercy, with their two lovers. The scene that you’re looking at captures this triumphant moment of escape.
